One of the loveliest surprises of writing bilingual children’s books is discovering where they travel.
Recently I heard from Sadie, a physiotherapy student in London, who took several Mooliprint books with her when she volunteered at a hospital near Zapopan Centro in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Among the things she packed from England were bilingual children’s books for the patients, their families, and the hospital staff. The books were shared in waiting rooms and wards, and they became part of everyday conversations — helping children enjoy stories while also helping Sadie practise her Spanish.
When Sadie told me about her experience, I was so touched by the way the books had been used that I suggested we try to send more. So we’re now planning a small fundraiser to donate 100 books to take with her on her next trip.
The books will go to the hospital, to families of patients, and hopefully to a local library too — helping children discover stories while exploring new languages.
My books originally began as a way to help my own daughters learn Chinese and English together. Hearing about them being shared with children and families in Mexico is a reminder of how far stories can travel.
I’m incredibly grateful to Sadie for taking my books with her and sharing them so generously. I can’t wait to see where the next suitcase of stories ends up! 😊
